Steps for Choosing and Evaluating Nursing Homes
The Nursing Home Patient Safety Initiative helps nursing homes in Texas meet high standards of quality. We train physicians, nurses and staff to provide the best care they can for residents. We also help consumers find quality nursing homes. Use this page to (1) find nursing homes in your area, (2) evaluate them and (3) prepare for long-term care. You can also link to related websites and resources for more information.
Step One: Choose a Nursing Home
Use the Nursing Home Search to find information on the quality of care provided to residents in over 17,000 Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing homes in the U.S. The database rates nursing homes on nineteen specific measures of quality care. The data is updated quarterly.
Step Two: Evaluate a Nursing Home
This nursing home checklist (27kbs PDF) can help you appraise a nursing home that you call or visit. Use a new checklist for each home. Then, compare the scores. This will help you select a nursing home that is a good choice for you or your relative. In addition to the prepared checklist, be sure to consider individual preferences and social needs as you visit facilities. For example, would your loved one be happier in the city or out in the country?
Step Three: Prepare for Long Term Care
The Family Handbook to Long Term Care (239kb PDF) can help you learn what to expect when a family member moves into a long-term care facility. It also gives tips on how to stay involved in caregiving.
